«Светлейший курфюрст, милостивый государь!
В глубоком почтении приношу я вашему королевскому высочеству настоящую скромную работу мастерства моего, коего я достиг в музыке, и всеподданнейше прошу вас воззреть на оную благосклонным взором не по достоинству самой композиции, которая сочинена плохо, но исходя из вашей, известной миру милости...» — такими словами Бах в 1733 году сопроводил отправку курфюрсту Саксонскому Фридриху Августу двух частей одного из величайших своих творений — Мессы h-moll — Kyrie и Gloria. Протестант, служивший в протестантской Германии, Бах писал в основном музыку для исполнения в лютеранских храмах. Правда, согласно реформе Лютера, отдельные разделы мессы в протестантском богослужении допускались, но Бах написал полную католическую мессу не случайно, как не случайно именно ее посвятил саксонскому курфюрсту. Дело в том, что Фридрих Август был еще и королем Польши, страны, неизменно приверженной католицизму, а потому и сам перешел в католичество. С 1717 года и его двор в Дрездене стал официально католическим. Мессу h-moll Бах создавал на протяжении многих лет. Далекий прототип Sanctus, по мнению исследователей, относится еще к 1724 году. Последние же поправки в партитуру композитор вносил вплоть до того дня, когда окончательно ослеп в 1750 году.
Жанр мессы исторически сложился в виде пятичастного произведения, состоящего из мольбы о прощении (Kyrie), гимна хвалы и благодарения (Gloria), догматической части — символа веры (Credo), литургической кульминации, взятой из ветхозаветной Книги Исайи (Sanctus), и заключения, прославляющего Господа Иисуса Христа (Agnus Dei). Сначала текст мессы читался, позднее стал петься. Некоторое время обе эти формы сосуществовали, но к XIV веку окончательно сложилась единая музыкальная форма. Месса h-moll Баха невероятно масштабна по сравнению с традиционными. Она также содержит пять частей — Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus и Agnus Dei, — но они, в свою очередь, делятся на несколько отдельных номеров.
