Все, кто знаком с творчеством Сенсационной Группы Алекса Харви, знают, что у группы был удивительный талант делать необычные каверы всем знакомых песен, причем из самых разных жанров популярной музыки. Альбом The Penthouse Tapes демонстрирует этот талант группы в полной мере: только три номера в альбоме - собственного сочинения, остальные - каверы таких разношерстных авторов, как Ирвинг Берлин, группа Osmonds или Алис Купер. Получились, казалось бы, не связанные между собой вещи, однако общий настрой, озорная харизма и теплый юмор Алекса легко соединяют все это в один спектакль, буффонаду, какие он устраивал на сцене.
Альбом открывается оригинальным номером Алекса и его бэнда - I Wanna Have You Back (Хочу, чтоб ты вернулась) - это буги в стиле глэм-рока, по своему ритму и гитарному звучанию напоминает T.Rex в их лучшие электрические времена. По словам Алекса, I Wanna Have You Back - "поп-песня, написанная в случайной ярости под вдохновением от гитарных риффов, наигранных Залом".
Один из оригинальных номеров альбома Jungle Jenny - про девушку Дженни, которая выросла в джунглях среди горилл, и была для них всеобщим предметом обожания, но нашла кусочек цивилизации - глянцевый журнал, в котором соблазнилась гламурными фотографиями красавчика Уилли. Дженни покинула джунгли, разыскала в городах этого Уилли, но все, чего удостоилась в этой цивилизации - стала работать живым тестером, то есть испытывала на себе новые виды губной помады и прочей химии. Penthouse Films "is the sixth album of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, released by Vertigo in 1976. According to Alex Harvey, on the insert for the record," we found these old films one morning while cleaning our penthouse - all these things were performed by us on stage, and remain in demand. Everyone who is familiar with the work of the Sensational Group Alex Harvey knows that the group had an amazing talent to make unusual covers for all familiar songs, and from a wide variety of popular music genres. The Penthouse Tapes album fully demonstrates this talent of the group: only three numbers in the album are of their own composition, the rest are covers of such motley authors as Irving Berlin, Osmonds or Alice Cooper. The result was seemingly unconnected things, but the general mood, mischievous charisma and Alex’s warm humor easily combine all this into one performance, a buffoonery, which he arranged on stage.
The album opens with the original number of Alex and his band - I Wanna Have You Back - a boogie in the style of glam rock, in its rhythm and guitar sound reminds T.Rex in their best electric times. According to Alex, I Wanna Have You Back is "a pop song written in a random rage inspired by guitar riffs played by the Hall."
One of the original issues of the Jungle Jenny album is about the girl Jenny, who grew up in the jungle among the gorillas, and was a universal subject of adoration for them, but found a piece of civilization - a glossy magazine in which she was seduced by the glamorous photos of handsome Willie. Jenny left the jungle, found this Willie in the cities, but all that she gained in this civilization began to work as a living tester, that is, she experienced new types of lipstick and other chemicals. And in the jungle at this time she was still remembered by the gorillas ...
