Страна готовилась к 30-летию Победы, и в Союзе композиторов был объявлен конкурс на лучшую песню о войне.
Буквально за несколько дней до окончания конкурса В. Г. Харитонов передал свои стихи соавтору. Давид Тухманов очень быстро написал музыку, и песню успели передать на последнее прослушивание конкурса.
Но никакого места песня «День Победы» не заняла. Мало этого, прослушивание песни вызывало болезненную, острую реакцию старших коллег Д. Тухманова, против песни прозвучали очень резкие высказывания, о чем немедленно стало известно на Гостелерадио.
Причина была в музыке и в её авторе. Поэт В. Г. Харитонов был ветераном войны, песни на его стихи ещё в 1950-е годы писали увенчанные лаврами композиторы (Анатолий Новиков, Вано Мурадели и другие). А Давид Тухманов был молодым автором, известным лишь по эстрадным шлягерам.
В те времена всю музыкальную политику государства определяло руководство Союза композиторов, то есть в основном весьма пожилые люди. Возраст в 30 с небольшим лет считался ещё незрелым. По мнению руководства Союза композиторов, а также теле- и радионачальников, Тухманов никак не мог соответствовать статусу автора песни государственного масштаба.
Хотя Д. Тухманов уже создал хиты «Последняя электричка», «Эти глаза напротив», «Белый танец», «Песенка про сапожника», «Я люблю тебя, Россия», «Гуцулочка», «Мой адрес — Советский Союз», «Как прекрасен этот мир» и многие другие, никаких званий и регалий, кроме премии Московского комсомола, у него ещё не было. И потому он, имея диплом профессионального композитора и написав три десятка популярных песен, только в 1973 году, с трудом, был принят в Союз композиторов.
Был и второй «минус» — в музыке песни «День Победы» были услышаны синкопы и элементы не то танго, не то фокстрота. В результате песня была запрещена. Песню не пропускали в эфир — ни на радио, ни на телевидении.
Некоторые из бывших начальников Гостелерадио, которые сейчас рассказывают о том, как они стали «крёстными отцами» песни «День Победы», на самом деле были теми цензорами, кто не пропускал песню в эфир. А без эфира песня как бы и не существовала.
Первым исполнителем песни «День Победы» был Леонид Сметанников. Он исполнил её на съёмках передачи «Голубой огонёк» в канун 9 мая 1975 года.
Лишь в ноябре 1975 года в концерте, посвящённом Дню милиции, Лев Лещенко (фактически обманув телевизионное руководство) исполнил «День Победы» в прямом телевизионном эфире. Публика сразу приняла песню, и «День Победы» был исполнен ещё раз — на «бис». После чего эту песню стала петь вся страна.
«День Победы» давно существует и в виде марша, который исполняют оркестры многих стран мира.

The country was preparing for the 30th anniversary of the Victory, and a competition for the best song about the war was announced at the Union of Composers.
Just a few days before the end of the competition, V. G. Kharitonov passed on his poems to the co-author. David Tukhmanov wrote the music very quickly, and they managed to transfer the song to the last audition of the competition.
But the song "Victory Day" did not take place. Not only this, listening to the song caused a painful, sharp reaction of D. Tukhmanov’s senior colleagues, very harsh statements were made against the song, which was immediately known at the State Radio and Television.
The reason was the music and its author. The poet V. G. Kharitonov was a war veteran, composers crowned with laurels wrote songs to his poems as early as the 1950s (Anatoly Novikov, Vano Muradeli and others). And David Tukhmanov was a young author, known only by pop hits.
In those days, the entire musical policy of the state was determined by the leadership of the Union of Composers, that is, mainly very elderly people. The age of 30 years old was considered still immature. According to the leadership of the Union of Composers, as well as television and radio managers, Tukhmanov could not correspond to the status of the author of the song of the state scale.

Tukhmanov has already created the hits “Last train”, “These eyes are opposite,” “White dance”, “Song about a shoemaker”, “I love you, Russia”, “Hutsulochka”, “My address is the Soviet Union”, “ How beautiful this world is ”and many others, he has not had any titles and regalia, except for the Moscow Komsomol Prize. And that is why, having a diploma of a professional composer and having written three dozen popular songs, it was not until 1973 that he was accepted into the Union of Composers with difficulty.
There was also a second “minus” - in the music of the song “Victory Day” syncopes and elements of either tango or foxtrot were heard. As a result, the song was banned. The song was not broadcast on either the radio or on television.
Some of the former chiefs of the Public Broadcaster, who now talk about how they became the "godfathers" of the song "Victory Day", were actually those censors who did not skip the song on the air. And without ether, the song did not exist.
The first performer of the song "Victory Day" was Leonid Smetannikov. He performed it on the set of the Blue Light program on the eve of May 9, 1975.
Only in November 1975, in a concert dedicated to the Day of Militia, Lev Leshchenko (in fact, having deceived the television management) performed “Victory Day” on a live television broadcast. The audience immediately took the song, and "Victory Day" was performed again - for an encore. After that, the whole country began to sing this song.
“Victory Day” has long existed in the form of a march performed by orchestras of many countries of the world.
