Nirvana is an iconic American rock band that entered the mainstream of the 1990s with their hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (1991). Nirvana has become the most famous grunge band; other Seattle bands with this style, such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, also became quite popular, and, as a result, the entire first half of the nineties after the release of the album "Nevermind" in the US on radio and music television grunge quite a significant part of the airtime was allocated.
In the early 90s, Kurt Cobain was in the eyes of the media not just a musician, but the “voice of the generation”, and Nirvana - the flagship of the “generation X”. [1]
The short but colorful history of the band was interrupted in 1994 by the death of Kurt Cobain. But in subsequent years, the group's fame only grew. Eight years later, the unfinished demo recording of the song "You Know You're Right", on which the group worked two months before Cobain's death (January 30) [2], took the first lines of the charts in the US and Europe. Since the release of their debut album, Nirvana's recordings have sold over 60 million copies (as of September 26, 2006) (see also Top Selling Musicians), including 10 million copies of Nevermind alone, which sold in the US [ 3].
"All Apologies" is a song from the American band Nirvana from the album In Utero, written by the band's frontman Kurt Cobain.
Initially, this composition was called "La, La, La ... La": in the "Diaries" of Kurt Cobain, several draft versions of the text have been preserved. The song was first recorded on January 1, 1991. In February 1993, Nirvana rewrote it again for the In Utero album with Steve Albini; it was later remixed by Scott Litt (along with "Heart-Shaped Box" and "Pennyroyal Tea"). In December 1993, a double single "All Apologies / Rape Me" was released (it also included the song "Moist Vagina", renamed "MV" on British releases due to censorship). The single peaked at # 32 on the UK Singles Chart and # 1 on Hot Modern Rock Tracks. An acoustic version of this song appears on MTV's live album Unplugged in New York and on the compilation album Nirvana.
In an interview with biographer Michael Azerrad, Cobain said that he dedicated the song to his wife, Courtney Love, and daughter Frances Bean: despite the fact that "her words are not directly related to them", the overall mood of the song is "calm, happy" - expresses his feelings for them.
In 1995, All Apologies received two Grammy nominations; in 2004 it was named Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time at number 455.
