Образованная в 1994 году в Дулуте, Миннесота (городе, ранее знаменитом только тем, что там вырос Боб Дилан) группа Low является, наверное, самой медленной в так называемом «slowcore» стиле. Нежная, простая и завораживающая музыка этого трио напоминает громкий шёпот, прерывающийся драматическим напряжением в интервалах между звуками.

Первоначально состоявшая из супругов Алана Спрахока (гитара/вокал) и Мими Паркер (барабаны/вокал), а также басиста Джона Николса, Low возникла как реакция на доминирование гранжа. Одним из первых их поклонников стал нью-йоркский продюсер Крамер, пригласивший трио записываться в свою студию. Получившееся демо принесло им контракт с лейблом Vernon Yard. После еще одного посещения студии Крамера, Low вышли оттуда с дебютным альбомом «I Could Live in Hope» (1994), великолепной пластинкой, демонстрирующей их минималистскую эстетику. Вскоре Николс покидает группу (и собирает свою - Best Boy Electric). Новым басистом становится Зак Салли. В 1995 обновленное трио записывает второй альбом Long Division. Последовавшее за этим появление на трибьюте Joy Division «A Means to an End» позже разрослось до ЕР «Transmission» (1996).

Большую часть времени в 1995 и 96 гг. Low провели, гастролируя с группами Soul Coughing, Luna и Spectrum. Будучи в туре с Pell Mell, они познакомились с продюсером Стивом Фиском и позже выбрали его для работы над своим новым альбомом «The Curtain Hits the Cast» (1996). Фиск, подюсировавший также Boss Hog и, хм, Nirvana, оказался походящим партнёром для группы, и запись «Curtain…» превратилась в процесс очищения звука Low до его глубинной сущности.
